One Pc Oil pan gasket and timing cover
I have the felpro one pc oil pan gasket. I also got the felpro timing cover gasket set. When I started my car for the 20 minute break in, I had a substantial oil leak at the front of the oil pan. Probably about 1/2 a quart over 20 minutes.
My question is do I use both the black gasket that came with the timing cover gasket kit AND the one pc oil pan gasket? Seems like the one pc gasket should seal this up alone, but I'm not sure if I'm overlooking something here? I'd like the second attempt here to cure the leak.

It appears that you allowed the black RTV to completely set-up before installing the pan. That could cause you a problem, if there is a bit too much RTV in those corners.
Best way to do that is to just let the RTV get a bit tacky, then put the pan in place and put bolts in and just snug them down a bit. THEN you let the RTV set up and, finally, torque the bolts.
If you have excess RTV in those joints, it could cause the pan to warp.

My car is a 71
The pic actually shows my second attempt. In the middle of the job I had to leave for the emergency room. Have a new gasket delivering this week to take another crack at it.
In my first attempt, I did not RTV the corners thoroughly. I think this also helped the oil leak.

The "emergency room" doesn't sound good...
Good luck on the second attempt. I don't think you needed to buy another one-piece gasket....just clean off the RTV and use it again. Unless it was damaged, it should last for many removals.

Wipe the areas you're going to put the RTV down really well with alcohol. RTV won't stick if there's any trace of oil.

That depends, are you using the original oilpan?

you may have to use longer bolts to get it started and then once its on replace with the old bolts one at a time

George,
Thank you for your response. I stopped at auto zone on my way home tonight and picked up an 1880. It lays on the pan nicely and I think it'll fit better. Some night this week I'll get it on there.
I knew the pan wasn't original, it's a 6 qt gm pan though. I just didn't think about it being different.
