What is your early shark TH400 tag color?
Based on the discussions with a few fellow NCRS members, I believe that the 1970 NCRS Technical Info & Judging Guide might be too restrictive when it refers to the 70-72 TH400 trim tags as YELLOW. People have noted seeing yellow on TH400 on 1971 and 1972 cars. My early 1970 original TH400 with 350/300 has a BLACK tag. I am attempting to collect some information to determine when the transition from black to yellow TH400 transmission tags occurred or what the differentiation between the colors might indicate.
My car is Feb 18 1970 #04102 350/300. It has a black tag. I have photos of the tag and the VIN stamp on the '70 Registry website: http://corvetteforum.net/c3/1970regi...asdetails.html
(Tag also pictured below)
Please, if you have the original TH400 in your car can you check your tag next time you're under the car? You can either post the information here, or e-mail it to me at Juliet@annapolis.net Be sure to include the last 5 digits of your VIN and the build date (including year) and engine type of your car please and what you found on the tag (color, numbers etc...)
To determine if the TH400 is original, check the VIN number stamping. The VIN is stamped onto a flat surface on the driver side, just behind the rubber bellows cover on the shifter cable. It's difficult to find. I have a far away photo on the registry website to help you locate it. (No, the pan is not supposed to be painted like mine is BTW). I also have an up close photo of the VIN stamp. It should be something like 70S4xxxxx where xxxxx is the last 5 digits of your VIN.
If the VIN matches, please check the tag. It is on the passenger side, towards the aft part of the transmission, held in place by a rivet in the center. If you look aft towards it you should see it. Please let me know what is stamped on the tag, as well as the printing color of your tag.
Thanks! ~Juliet

I don't have anything to contribute vis-a-vis the tag color. Except, that is, incredulousness.
You really mean to tell me NCRS guys crawl under the car at shows to see what color the tag is?
Getthefugouttahere.

NCRS judges crawl under the car for other things (starter numbers for example), but the tags are not a judged item because without a lift they're pretty impossible to see. It's more of an academic issue in this instance. What can I say, some of us like worrying about these things!
