EGR Police have me paranoid!
OK, so here in Ontario, Canada the EGR police are just a little hyper at times, I have already experienced the roadside inspection once with the Camaro ... not in a hurry to do it again. So since I'm in the process of building the 71 base coupe, anyone have an emissions diagrams and any advice tricks or ideas?
The car as it sits has had all those mid 70's, to hell with the environment performance mods done so any of the stock emission controls have long since gone away.

I believe you are right ... so my Edelbrock Scorpion 2 is safe! But I'm sure there must have been something on there?
The EGR Police are what we call the local Ministry of Transport guys, your DMV officers.

When inspecting passenger cars, vans, pickup trucks and other light-duty vehicles, Smog Patrol
officers will give a vehicle a thorough visual check to ensure the emission components haven’t
been tampered with. Any visible smoke emission is timed to determine if it’s excessive.
Officers inspecting heavy-duty trucks or buses place a sensor in the exhaust pipe to measure the
thickness of the exhaust. If a vehicle fails or the emission control equipment has been altered or
removed, officers can issue fines, Provincial Officer Orders and seize vehicle licence plates.
Mike W. can correct me if I am wrong but I believe the EGR was introduced in 1973.

You got inspected in the middle of winter ?
I got inspected 3 years ago with no pollution equipment on the Vette not even cats and the car stunk. 3 police cars and 2 Environment officers checked me out and the environment guys know their stuff.
I was lucky, one of the environment guys said he could pull the plates and have it towed but he said the car is so nice I'll let you take it home to fix the pollution stuff on it

Canadian cars have the same pollution controls as the US 49 state versions which makes it a bit simpler to figure out.

I got pulled over a few years ago in Wasaga, only thing wrong was that I was using a breather. I keep a copy of the page from the AIM manual that states what originally came on my vette in the storage compartment in case I get inspected again.

Assembly Instruction Manual, although just pulled mine out and it says 1972 Corvette Assembly Manual. The page I copied shows what was on each engine ie Air Pump or not.

You are correct, but other smog devices were introduced back as far as 1966. I gave up trying to remember what's correct for every possible engine and transmission combo for every year in every district.

The '71 base engine had the following emissions equipment on it:
PVC valve; Fuel vapor recovery canister which dumped fumes into line going to front baseplate on carb (this line was 'T-ed' in with the PVC valve outlet line); TCS [transmission controlled spark] system--included a LO/HI temps switch to manage the vacuum cutoff for the distributor vacuum advance can when at idle & also included switch in/on transmission for higher gear ranges, which allowed manifold vacuum to reach the advance can; anti-dieseling relay; electrical idle solenoid and vacuum switch attached to carb.
As mentioned, the hardware and hookups are shown in the 1971 AIM. Same is described and shown in the Chevrolet Chassis Service Manual.
THERE WAS NO A.I.R. PUMP OR EGR VALVE REQUIRED FOR THE 1971 BASE ENGINE CARS IN THE 49 STATES AND CANADA.

Just to add insult to injury Greg, I was speaking with my Dad's neighbour (your MOE friend) last weekend. He informed me that they received a memo a few weeks back about increased inspections this summer........also*to include car shows!!!!!

They have hit the charity car shows for years. I saw a couple of cars de-licensed and towed away about four years ago. Mind you to be fair to the MOE folks the car has to be VERY seriously/obviously modified. And completely devoid of factory emissions equipment. Generally they are pretty reasonable people and will work with you if it is a minor infraction. But if you have a post-1974 car without a catcon, be prepared to make a visit to Midas.

Sure glad I do not live in one of the states that go wild. When I lived in CA in (2000)I replaced a engine in a Big BRONCO, could not pass smog and was sent to the referee as the engine was not original. The emissions were good but the rear diff did not have the speed sensor that was on vehicles for the year of the engine. Had to sell the vehicle. Live in Texas now and they don't look under the hood..

Just another example of bureacracy running amok and out of control.I would be surprised if all these so called grossly polluting pre 1980 collector and hot rods together in one year do the same environmental damage that one commercial oil leaking diesel truck with a bad injector does in a day. What a waste of time and resources, even what was the worst tax grabbing socialist province,BC-has seen the light and is eliminating AirCare testing for passenger vehicles next month.
