Default 1974 Starter Solenoid Wiring Q.

I can smell spring...sort of. The car will soon be home. Parts are jumping off basement shelves ready to go.

On the solenoid I understand the "R" and "S" as well as the 4-gauge battery wire. And the ground from the motor mount goes to the front brace bolted to the block. But as best I can remember there is also a 14-or-so-gauge wire that accompanies the 4-gauge wire on the center post. What is that wire for?

As well, that wiring and the area needs a good clean-up after years of oil drips from...wherever. Will old-fashioned Gunk degreaser hurt that wiring? Or is this a job for diluted Simple Green.

I lost the diagram in a PC crash. It is a good one. It looks to be a red wire with a fusible link....somewhere. But where it goes is hard to follow. I am not having problems with it so I'll just do a cleaning and hook it back up.

That wire is what sends power to the rest of the car. It should have a fusible link in it.

That makes sense. It probably finds its way back to the fusebox.

Yep, that's the only connection to the positive battery terminal via the positive battery cable.

But it goes to the fusebox, not to the battery with the 4-gauge cable. Sorry to be so dense.

Hi Paul,

I just rewired my charging system and snapped this photo before I started. Does your car have that black junction box on the drivers fender behind the master cyl?

Yes, but I can't take a pic as my car is not here. Is that where the mystery wire goes?

On my car it goes like this:

Starter + post (next to battery cable) > 14 ga fusible link to protect > 10 ga wire with a #10 ring terminal to that junction block.

One side of the amp gauge was spliced into that wire after the fusible link. So, there is about a 6 foot red wire from the starter to the junction block and you will find a black wire spliced into it that goes to the fire wall block.

Alternator positive post 10 ga > to junction block.

I put in new wires, links and terminals and spent a lot of time on the phone with Mark at Mad Electrical.

Hope this helps.

It goes to the fusebox from the 4 gauge cable where they are joined on the solenoid stud.
