Default Loud Clunk when initially moving forward or backward Front Drives side

Guys, I have a 1972 Stingray that makes a loud clunk in the front driver's side when releasing the brake and moving backward. Then if I apply the brake, shift to "DRIVE" (this is an automatic) and release the brake to go forward the cluck happens again. It only does this from a dead stop. I don't hear any clunking while driving. I can make it clunk every time by going forward then backward. Any ideas? Thank you very much.

Like 69Vette said...be sure where the clunk is....

If it's really the passenger front....could be many things...all of which could be dangerous......caliper...rotor.....wheel bearing....lug nuts....control arms....ball joints...brackets....tie rods....idler arm....shock....

Default Thanks to all

Thank you all for the help in identifying the problem. I'll check out each and every one this weekend when I can get this rig up on a rack. Hopefully it isn't anything too disasterous but then with a 42 year old car I guess it has a right to have a few aging problems - just like me. I'll report back with the results. Thanks to all again.

also, your flex plate may have cracked, and you are hearing the split pieces unalign and realign every time its put in motion.

Had a similar thing on my first Vette. Turns out all the shims had fallen out from the drivers side A arm causing it to rock slightly causing the clunk.

Default Clunk discovered

Guys,

The ckunk ion the left front side was caused by bad upper control arm bushings. The a-arm would move back and forth when the car began forward or backward motion. replaced the bushings and all is good. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions and help. In checking out all suggstions I also fond other "problems" that need fixing. Thanks again to all.
