Default a/c compressor clutch

My 1982's air compressor is so low on freon that compressor clutch will not engage. When I begin adding freon will clutch engage or will I need to jump relay to get clutch to engage pror to adding fre
on?

My 78 needed a can or two, or three every spring. As soon as I started the first can the clutch would engage. If you do not have a big leak, that should work.
I just had a shop draw a vacuum, add freon 134a, and install a dye. I never got this cold and next week they will check for leaks.
