Galvanized Frame
Hello all,
I just got back from Tennessee Galvanizing in Jasper, TN. They did a great job. Very impressed with their service and price. $300 out the door and I did my rear cross member too! Next is structural foam!!
Here's some pics.....Holy crap!! This new picture upload procedure on CF is friggin' awesome!!

It should oxidize over time and look more like your typical guard rail on the highway. I think it may depend on the metal and the amount of nickel that is added during the process. It would be interesting if it stayed this shiny forever.

It's a little strange looking, but different so it has somewhat of a cool factor I guess. If I wasn't doing the structural foam, this frame would already be painted. I just had no other full proof way to know that the inside frame rails would be rust resistant. $300 is cheap peace of mind.
My car is black everywhere, so I don't know what this would look like. I guess it's a gamble. The frame is very visible in the engine compartment so if it stayed shiny I think it would look cool. I just haven't seen many frames where the frame color contrasts with the body color. I know one member who has a really sweet late model c3 with a white body and an orange powder coated frame. I think his handle is Mike-something. I need to look at his more closely. Plus, it's not guaranteed to stay shiny. It may oxidize and that is a dull gray and that would suck. I'd rather have a cool black frame in that case.

I think it is almost guaranteed to oxidize unfortunately. If you like to look, you could always paint it a nice silver. If you remember the car "Frankensport" built by a member here years ago, I always loved the look of the silver chassis.

That looks pretty neat for sure and a great price. My concern is that galvanized metal is famously hard to get paint to stick to. Ford and a few others tried using galv body panels on a few cars in the 70's with disastrous results!
I'm sure there are acid etching primers that could be used.

Yeah I agree. You actually etch it with vinegar. Paint has come a long way since the 70's. You would use a latex based primer. After that, anything goes.

Looks good real good price, too
Seen a couple guys on the Chevelle forum do that pretty sure they used a self etching primer over it then painted. Ask around in the tech section bet youll find some good tips

Do the dip the whole frame in? If so then the inside of frame is protected also very nice!

Does anyone have experience with galvanized frames? HDG galvanizing weakens the steel somewhat but I don't know if that will be an issue with the thick frame metal.

Yes, the whole frame is dipped. The process is two fold. The first dip is in an acid bath to remove all rust. Then the second dip is in 850 degree molten zinc. Yes, the entire surface area inside and out is rust free and galvanized.

I did not know self etching primers existed. That may be what Ontario was calling acid etching primers. I am definitely NOT a body or paint guy. The guys on the Chevelle forums use the latex primer and that is what I put my faith in.
