Default 1979 Possible Fuel Leak at Vapor Canistor How/Why?

Hello:
I'm new to the forum and my 1979 Corvette. While driving it home, I had a fuel leak. Unfortunately, I chose to shut the car off and let it cool off before looking for the leak. Anyhow, I have not been able to duplicate the leak.

The car is a 1979, L42, Automatic.

Situation: approx. 1/2 full fuel tank, driving in 100 degree F day, fuel was pouring from the left side (driver) between the front wheel and firewall. I have some small cracks in the vacuum line back to the tank from the vapor canister.

Ideas where to look? Why if so, do fuel pour from the vapor canister?

Thanks!
David

Fuel should not be at the canister, only vapors. Do you tend to overfill the tank? Do you have the correct gas cap on the car?

Yes. It is a sealed cap.

Hi David,
Welcome!
Glad you're here!
There is a vapor/fuel separator mounted to the driver's side of the tank.
It has a simple operation but if it's not working I guess it could allow fuel to travel as far forward as the canister.
It would be good to check both the separator and the line leading to the canister, and the lines from the canister to the engine.
Do you have the Chassis Service Manual for your 79?
Regards,
Alan

Thank you! and thanks for your response. I went down this path to find out that separator valve is not supposed to be in corvettes newer than 1974. I actually tried to order it.

The fuel hose from the tank fuel line to the vapor canister is old and needs replacing. Plan to do that this weekend. I also plan to pull apart the canister and repair/replace as needed and have new filters in the mail.

One note I forgot to add, there is a wet ring look around the bottom 1/2" of the vapor canister.

Thanks!!!
