Default automatic trans problem

have not driven my '76 since last year. finally was able to get it out yesterday. pulled out on the road and the trans would not shift to next gear. went right back home and checked the fluid. a little low so i added some. went back out on the road and the same thing. would not shift. fluid was nice and red, no burning smell. last time i drove it last year it was fine. any thoughts?
thanks in advance for the help.

If your trans is a th400 check vacuum hose to modulator, and you may have a bad détente relay in the tranny. Not a bad fix but you have to remove the tranny pan. Do a search on the forum for th400 shifting issues. Part is less than $20.

if the trans is a 350 like mine, pull the hose off the modulator, see if fluid comes out, if it does , replace it.
