Default "Opera" bulb above the heater duct, can I substitute it?

Hi All,

I'm replacing all my bulbs in the gauge cluster as I have it out to replace the clock and radio. I can't find the correct bulb that goes above the heater ducts, can I substitute it with anything else?

Thanks,
Sam

NAPA used to have them P/N 558.

I discretely drilled the down-fire hole about 25% larger so that the bulb can do some good. One of the best things I've done -

Also does the heater/ac control panel suppose to light up? I just finally drove my car in the dark last night and saw that all gauge lights work, trany light works, the opera light and wiper lights works - but nothing at the heater/ac panel. Thx

What size drill bit did you use?

Did you put the correct bulb back in or use an LED bulb?

Street Rat,
I used white LEDs this time.
With LEDs the climate controls are plainly visible, though, with the larger hole that the engineers missed (my theory - they're only paid to test drive during normal workday hours - trust me, this is an informed comment from being in the OEM industry). In any case, even with the standard bulb which I value the chance to put them back some day, the lighting would be better on the climate controls once you enlargen the lighting downfire hole. I stair-stepped up three drill bit sizes before I found the one that didn't make you squint to see the climate controls even with good vision.

Just a follow up, I found a store that had 2 in stock so I bought them both. Lakeside, I wish I saw your post before I put everything back together, great idea!

I ask again because a lot of so called "correct lamps" are not. Are you guys able to get the ones with the lens tip?

I don't believe it is suppose to, mine (79) has no light socket, just one for the trany, the heater--A/C were to be lit by the "opera" bulb
