Your past the Super 10 capabilities long term. Go Tom's 12 bolt with 31/30 splined axles, 1480 u joint setup with 3 1/2" halfshafts and you won't have to worry. By the time you do the cryo treatments and build it all your close in price anyway. You will just need a little taller tire and crank the outer spring bolts down a little or wind it a little tighter to get your 140 in 4th.

Looks like you lost your pre load on your pinion gear.....how was it torqued? did you use a crush sleeve or solid spacer? Just curious......did that in my buddies Camaro after changing the pinion seal, thats how I learned gear set-up and differential rebuilding from the GM service manual and a talented old mechanic we both worked for while going to school.

Eric, it looks like the ring gear damage happened after the carrier broke.
I have to agree with Kevin, forget about the Super 10. After reading your motor thread your torque load is way beyond the strength of the 10 bolt carrier.

Find out if 427hotrod has good insurance coverage and run off with his dana 60 setup. 4x4 folks after tired of breaking 44s put in a 60.
Have to brag on my road trip on the 650 suzuki enduro from DFW to sequoia national park then over to moro bay on the coast then down to anehiem then redlands to visit two different cousins. Gone 8 days, three days i was in there cars going places. Of the five days on the motorcycle the last day i only rode the coast for around 300 miles goofing off. 3,650 miles total. The other four days i had rode 3,350 miles divided by 4 days i averaged 837 miles per day on a single cylinder dirt bike with lights in September heat. As my California cousins might say.. not to shabby .. for someone almost 62.

i want to find a dana 60 out of a pickup shorten it to around 50 to maybe 54 inches. Wonder what yr and types of pickups had them. Might can find a good one with 450 + rear end ratio already in it.

ok... reading all the responses... calling different shops like Toms.... and thinking....
I do not like the gear ratios offered in the 12 bolt
I do not like the larger rotating mass
I do like the stronger rear end
on the super 10 i like the gear ratios
I like the lighter rotating assembly
I do not like it being so week
is there a better and stronger carrier then the eaton?
if i can find one i may try it and cyro everything and use the stronger end caps... but i would have to find a stronger carrier... if not... its the 12 bolt.. no option. :-(

Well, the 12 bolt goes into the same housing as the 10 bolt does.
It´s not that much bigger. Another set of rims will have a bigger influence on the rotating mass. And most people don´t care about this when buying rims.
About the ratios, 6mph less @140 is not that much in my opinion. Or like Mike said: put other wheels on it and you will compensate it.
Another plus is that shorter rears are most times better for acceleration. Of course you may need other tires in your case.
I would not feel save with a standard diff if I was you.
(And thats the reason why I Mike is already building a 12bolt for me )
