Default C3 - 68 - problem - What can this "klonk" sound be, and where does it come from?

Hello everyone

I have a problem with some loud noises coming from the rear, this happens sometimes when I turn at low speed, it sure sounds like it comes from the differential or gearbox, my 68 Corvette is equipped with a Turbo Hydra Matic three-speed automatic transmission.
The problem does not occur all the time, but happens almost every time I'm out and drivers.

What can this "klonk" sound be, and where does it come from?

Kind regards Jesper

I have just started to have the same issue. I see some fluid (leak) near the Diff, so Im hoping its just low Diff fluid, but I cant tell yet because I have to get my Spare Tire Lock off (no key). Im hoping its not a Broken Gear in the Diff. Im following this thread to see what others think.

Change out the old funky differential fluid and replace with GM's lube and the special additive. Worked for me. Lou.

Wowed777, You do know that the bolt that the carrier lock is on can unscrew, right? Lou.

Default Rear

Your problem is common. Drain the rear end with a slurp gun. You can buy one at NAPA or other auto store. Add a bottle of GM gear oil, add two bottles of the above listed posi additive and top off with the second bottle of gear oil. Fill until you feel the oil with your finger. Next, go to an empty parking lot and do tight figure eights in forward and reverse until you just about throw up. The popping you are hearing are the posi clutches sticking when you turn. Jerry
