I am still looking for a decent pair of heads for under $1000... if i could find a pair for around $600-$800 I would pull the trigger right now. All i can find are in the $1000 range

Word from the machine shop was, bad seal from intake manifold to block leaking oil quickly, bent crank, spun rod bearings, and two bad rods.
time to build a 383!

I was faced with the decision of restoring my camel hump heads or buying new.

I decided to buy off-shore castings, have them touched up, and have all my own hardware installed. This allowed me a substantial amount more valve lift than the stock heads would have.

I could have re-worked my steel heads for $700. My new heads cost $1,050.

Haven't had a moment's issue with them. Flow good and saved a lot of weight.

If budget is the big issue go with a L31 vortec long block
http://gmpowertrainwarehouse.com/12530282.asp
This cam should work with the valve springs and lift, Bolt in. Cam included in long block is a lower duration HD truck cam.
http://www.crower.com/camshafts/chev...ast-steel.html
You will need a vortec intake that fits your carb, melonized distributor gear ($35) and an electric fuel pump and regulator (<$100).
Gets you an all new 4 bolt main block with good heads and well matched, 350-375 HP maybe more, Actual redline will be about where the block is rated (5500)and lots of torque. You can do a spring upgrade if you want a better cam.

Sorry guys, I forgot to post pictures of the carnage!
One of these things are not like the others!

Pulling off rods to check the bearings.. rods looked a bit toasty.

Bingo! spun rod bearing.

Carb was obviously maladjusted...

Waaaayy too much sealant under intake manifold.

these plugs only had a couple hundred miles.

freshly built 383 stroker!
