Default Radiator and expansion tanks.

Hi Guys, I'm a little confused, my 72 Corvette has a radiator cap with a lever on the top, I think this is to relieve pressure before taking off the cap. It also appears to have a vacuum relief on the cap. There is a small hose above the rad cap seal that I considered to be an overflow OR should I have an expansion tank?? On another subject but similar, my friend has a 1977 Vette with over heating problems and he does not have an expansion tank either?? Should he have??

Regards Greg in Dubai where the sun shines every day.

Cap with safety lever is not original
Rest of your answer depends: base/LT1/LS5 350/454? auto/4speed? A/C?

Stock aluminum radiators did not have filler necks and did not have radiator caps. They used the expansion tank on the RH fender skirt. Stock copper/brass radiators have a filler neck and radiator cap and did not use the expansion tank.

Which radiator do you have?

No. He should have a plastic coolant recovery tank.

I have a copper / brass radiator, I may have later non original radiator cap but I believe this will work the same as no expansion tank just an overflow tube, is that correct? Thanks regards, Greg

No, a plastic coolant recovery tank as stated above.

It's a shame that vendor identifies that tank as an expansion tank vs. a radiator overflow tank.

Note: 1977 second design has a screw on cap & moulded connections.
