Default HELP! Shortest Air Filter Assembly needed or ideas?

HI guys!,

Building one hell of a 454 here...for my 69 vert. It has the stock raised L88 hood...which gives GREAT Clearance...BUT kind of used it up with the intake manifold with aluminum heads...running an 880 QuickFuel Carb.

SO...I have from carb flange (area where base of filter meets carb) to highest point I can use within the stock cowl is 2.5"...the stock cowl also only has 12.25" of space for air filter assembly.

I am not sure if this is a stock 68 or 69 L88 raised cowl hood. But those seem to be the parameters I need to use. Stock 350 car.

I did a search and saw ECKLERS may carry one...will call tomorrow.

I looked into a KN but the ONLY filter that will work will be 11" and it does NOT come with a drop base...Wasnt there something stock?

Need help here! Ideas please...

Thanks,
Ron

I've heard of instances where the foam filter in these have caught fire from a backfire. Could be true or could be BS.

do you have a typo you state "the stock cowl also only has 12.25" of space" ?
anything less than a 3" filter and you are getting into restrictive air cleaner territory. I have an L-88 hood and a RPM Air Gap, SBC, with drop base air cleaner and run a 4" filter. What manifold did you install that lost all your height or are you not using a drop base air cleaner base?

Foam Filters are known not to filter very well. Plus they tend to catch fire if you get a backfire.

Stock L88 would have been this.

Absolutely agree with bashcraft and others on that filter being a fire issue if used during initial start up or tuning. After seeing it happen I wouldn't consider using it.

Thanks for the replies! Yes...decided against the foam filter...

MEL---the cowl hood has a 12.25" circular opening/space...

DDAWSON---YES...that is the pic! That drop base looks like the part...will that fit a Holley 4 barrel/quickfuel 880? Need a drop base....to fit something!...

wondering what the L88 ran air filter size & carb? didnt they run a 4 barrel?

My carb sticks up into the cowl...

I have an edelbrock performer rpm. 454. aluminum heads. quickfuel 880.

I found a KN that would fit without a drop base (NEED A DROP BASE FOR THIS! ARGH!)
could use a 9" top filter, and 9" with 2 " air filter, and flush metal mount...

Let me know guys! thanks again!

Ron

The L88 used a Holley so i know it clears the standard 4 barrel.

You can see the V shape of the base to clear the Holley ends.

get ahold of pauldana about his cold airs
he had pretty low clearance issues as well and made these. a few of the guys on here are running them

also, acts as a true cold air intake as well as a ram air at speed

It's an 850 Holley, no choke, mechanical secondaries.

I don't know if they still do but K&N would build an air filter to your specs.
I had them build one for me a while back and he charge was just a bit more than an off the shelf filter of a similar size.

I run a Holley Strip Dominator intake on my 454, Carb is a Holley 800.

The carb is sitting on a 1/2" spacer and have the L88/LT1 drop base from Ecklers and a 3" K/N filter.

I cut out the hood insert to make room for the 14" filter.
I also modified a 16" "Dominator" air filter base and welded this to the bottom of the L88/LT1 drop base to seal to the hood.

I have also milled of the choke tower for better room and flow.

This works fine for me.

You will find some pictures of the completed cleaner here: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-wanted-2.html

rickyberg! great custom job! looks clean!

I was thinking of doing L88 base (which should be here wednesday), foam seal, and using a 14x3 KN filter in the hood itself to replace the foam...my engine builder is pushing some sort of protection for the hood to carb, hence where that L88 cover comes in, but heard it burns HP up...trying to figure that out...dont want to toast the hood!

also got a great cold air intake kit from pauldana...looks very modern...sharp!, not sure yet.

thanks,
R
