Fried alternator on 68?

Fried alternator on 68?
Hi all,
Not had time to diagnose completely but suspect I fried my alternator.
68, manual, 327, pretty stock with a few minor mods. Vintage air and more recently a mini starter.
Was out for a drive and noticed that my vintage air stopped working.
Looked and saw the ammeter was at a hard +40.
Suspected short, so parked up immediately and checkout things, especially the the mini stater, concerned about wiring on the exhaust etc. all good, no smoke, and after a detailed look decided to try again. Disconnected vintage air, in case problem was there.
No luck.
Symptoms.
Idle 0 amps.
Any reving of engine the ammeter would rise accordingly, up to a hard 40A.
Back to idle and 0A.
Drove home by running up to 60mph (40A), then into neutral to coast at 0A.
Not sure if it is a gauge, sense or fried alternator/regulator.
Intend tomorrow to put a multi meter onto, batt, sense pin on alternator etc but appreciate any thoughts or diagnosis suggestions.

Alt.
It could be the voltage regulator or a diode in the alt. In any event, too much voltage into the battery is dangerous. Check the charging system with a voltmeter. Jerry

Looks like the alternator/ regulator combo has been swapped out for an alternator with internal regulator at some stage, I cannot find a regulator anywhere.
I found this image on the web, mine looks like the SI type.

Also checked the alt volts 15v and ramps up to 18v with revs.
With key on had bat v at pins 1&2 on alternator
Decided to remove alt and take to auto electrician to check.

Update,
Had it checked and it is fried.
Suspect the addition of a few extra loads, 40 years was enough to push it over the edge.
Got a new 90A one installed and all good.
In some ways was glad it was the alternator, at least the fix was quick. Others might have been cheaper but am getting a bit over chasing electrical problems.
