How the HECK am I suppose to break these Vanes.....
I'm ready to throw this air pump in the Potomac and screw getting the car inspected.....
Anyone have a clue how to get the vanes out of the air pump?? As you can kind of see, the actual vanes are attached to bearing type deals that a rod goes through to keep them in line. I have no clue how to get in there and break the vanes....you can't get the round cylynder of the casing either....
ANyone have any clues??
Thanks....

Saginaw Division used to make the exhaust emissions air pump. Holley also used to make air pumps. I might have a old manual on how to disassemble the pump. Unfortunately, I am on vacation at the moment. The good news is that I should be back in Saginaw tomorrow. Is there any kind of markings on the aluminum housing or on the back cover as to who manufactured the pump? Saginaw would have what is called the "road S". I don't know if the Saginaw and Holley pumps are identical. The Saginaw pump design evolved through the years so I am not sure if have the necessary information. I will try and get back tomorrow.

Brian
Since I started you on this. The pump was not repairable, so I can not find any exploded views.
In the Service Manual they talk about removing the front air filter vane. (under the pulley)
Have you tried to take the front off? There might be bolts or screws under the plastic. They show using a screwdriver to pry the plastic vane off the front.
Just trying to help.

Sorry Brian, I have no clue.
I'm just lurking here - to see how it goes.
I'd like to do this to another car of mine.
Good luck.
On second thought ... not sure if drilling out the rivets will do it - maybe.
Does it look like the end if the shaft that shows in the front could be pressed out ?
That's all I can think of for now.

From what I can see there is little chance of replacing any internal parts in that pump that may have failed. Why not just put it back together and use it as is? The pumps are not completely noise free, they will make a bit of a whine that increases with engine rpm.

Any 1973-79 Chevrolet pump will do. I tried to buy a repair kit for mine but they are not available. Now I know why. Thanks for posting.
