what kind of engine is it???

As others have already said, it is really impossible to tell from the outside; other than to confirm that it is a small block Chevy V8 built from the late 50's until the late 70's (and beyond). The differences are all internal that determine its performance.
What we can see it that it has headers (better exhaust flow), an aluminum intake (better breathing) and what looks like a Holley carburetor (can of worms lol). Externally it has several common 'upgrades', so, its not 'stock'. On their own these parts do not add much performance on a weaker stock engine, but, can add to the possibility of other work being done. All of these parts can be added to an original engine. To add any real performance the camshaft would need to be replaced and we can't see that from a photo. To build a stock engine into a 383 the crankshaft, rods and pistons would need to be replaced which could mean its a completely rebuilt engine (means good thing).
What we are seeing could be a stock 305 with added intake and exhaust parts making as low as 200 horsepower. It could also be a high compression 383 making 450 HP, but, only the builder would know; just can't tell from a picture.

Can you tell us what it is installed in, what type of trans it has bolted to it, and possibly what gear ratio the rear axle is? Then, can you tell us if you have heard it start up, idel, and how it revs up? Finally, if you have driven the car, can you tell us how the car performs with this motor (pulls away from a stop, accelerates at cruise, acts when down-shifted)?
While these answers won't exactly tell you what is inside of the motor, they might help determine if the motor is healthy or hurt, whether it has higher lift cam in it, and whether the motor is actually a good starting point for your purposes.
One other item to consider, what is the overall condition of the rest of the car (mechanical, body, interior)? If the car is clean and priced right, the type of motor may not matter, as that is something that can be "fixed" easily later.
Good luck

You have the best answers possible with the information you provided. It is a Chevy Small block. Has some external aftermarket parts. It could be a 170 HP 265 or it could be a 550 HP 427.
