That IS the kind. Wtf can anyone tell from a pic of the top of the motor? The displacement could be anything from 265 to 400 ci. Its a Chevy smallblock.

Hi MRK,
Welcome!
First posts!!!!
It's difficult to determine just what that engine is because it's had some modifications done to it.
If it were still in the configuration it was when it was new, and if it was originally in a Corvette when it was new, there'd be more visible hints about just "what it is".
At this point with the information available, you've been told about all that anyone can tell…. it's a small block Chevrolet of some sort.
Can you tell us a little more about it and maybe post some more pictures?
With a bit more info people can tell you where to look on the engine in order to determine what it was originally at least.
In front of the right side cylinder head there will likely be a pad with some information stamped into it. That would be a good start.
Regards,
Alan
Look for something like this.

Hi mrk,
That's a start.
What that means is that this engine was likely originally 350 cubic inches in displacement and the internal parts of the engine have been changed so that it's now 383 cubic inches of displacement.
That all that can really be said from just knowing it's been described as a 383.

Alan

As everyone stated, its a small block chevy....used from 1955 to date. Except this one has several aftermarket dress up parts...the only physical modifications that are apparent...It does not guarantee it runs or is very fast....
but whatever........

Generally a 383 is considered to be a high performance, very high torque engine. I advise you do dome SERIOUS homework before you start looking into the world of older cars.....I assume you are fairly new at this, and these cars require constant upkeep.
Also- be weary of people who claim their engine is anything other than stock unless they can prove it. The Chevy Small block can be anywhere from 256 to 400 cubic inches with NO visible exterior differences. Many guys have been sold a '350' and when they got home with their new classic car, they ran the VIN plate on the engine and found out they just bought an anemic 305.

Hi mrk,
As others have posted…. having just that single descriptive piece of information tells nothing about the engine except that it MAY now be 383 cubic inches instead of what ever size (cu. in.) it was originally.
Chevrolet didn't produce a 383 cu. in. engine so if it is in fact now 383 cu. in. it's been modified by someone.
It may be a good engine, but there's just no way of knowing that with only a single piece of information.

Alan
