Default L71 427 Starter Confusion.

So I needed to replace the starter in my 68 427. I removed the starter and replaced it with a starter from Advance Auto Parts. I thought big block starters are very common. This replacement starter just doesn't fit right and needs to be shimmed. I ordered a starter from Zip products for the 427 and 454 big block and it's been back ordered for 2 months now. My question is : Is the differences in big block starter cases? And where can I buy the correct starter that doesn't need to be shimmed? Thanks Tom.

Starters are pretty common- the nose and the windings are the difference. The nose of the starter is where the distance from the ring gear (flexplate or flywheel) comes from and then the length of the nose controls the depth. Depth is pretty common on Chevrolet. Other difference is if it's a HD starter. Easily identified by a 1/2 long extension between the terminal end of the solenoid and the connector coming out of the starter housing.
If you match up the starter physically and don't let them beat you into accepting apart number ONLY match, you should be good. After all, we all know that nobody in a parts store or warehouse EVER mixes up part numbers and boxes.

Default 396/427 stsrter

The correct starter has a cast iron nose, and you want the one with the 3/4 extension between the starter and solenoid...That's the heavy duty starter too....Without the 3/4 extension it will fit the application. but its what we call a light duty....Sold all over in every parts store....

Also fits 396 Camaros and sold at our parts store.....

PS, The 68 in my avatar on the left has the same starter as what your looking for
and make sure its a HD and do not use any shims...

Do you still have the original one? Have it rebuilt locally or change the end housings.
