Default 68 floor pan question

I was asked to look at the floor/tunnel of a 68 big block, automatic convertible. The VIN is about 4200. There is a press-molded piece bonded onto the lower corner where the firewall, tunnel and floor all meet on the passenger side. The piece is the correct color, definitely press molded, and fits perfectly. It looks like that corner was cut off and replaced with this new piece. Has anybody seen this? Was this a factory mod for big blocks? Any ideas?

Thanks
Larry

Hi Larry,
I believe you'll find it was a modification to the underbody required for a car with an automatic transmission.
Because of the bulge in the panel the right-side carpet was different on automatic transmission cars.

Alan

Yep, that piece was added to the floor of Corvettes equipped with the automatic, big block and small block.

Thanks. I guess I have only worked on 4-speed 68s

this is from a 1972 350 auto

so this is a very timely question, as i've got a problem/query with mine as well.

as per my 700r4 bits thread, https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ly-bits-3.html

my new trans fouls the passenger side of the tunnel on this panel.

i think if i can remove this panel from the trans side of the tunnel, and glue it back on from the inside of the car,
there should then be enough clearance..

any ideas on how to remove it, hot air gun to soften the glue maybe???
