Default carb flames!

I replaced the intake on my car among a few other things....new edelbrock intake,,,... I had everything back together and the car running for a few minutes idling just fine.. I shut it off to fix a loose hose on the radiator... the car will not start back up... gas shooting out the the vents on the edelbrock ... what am I missing...

I took the top off... blew it out... didn't help... I also noticed there was smoke coming out of the breather in the valve cover...

Since you had the distributor out to change the intake, you may not have gotten the dizzy tightened down enough and it slipped. Yes, check timing.

its not the timing... when I drained the carb cleaning it out it fired right up and ran for 10 minutes idling perfect and I revved it and it was smooth.. I shut the car off and poof.. gas went squirting out of the carb vents when I went to restart..... I repeated the same steps.. it again fired right up.. but when I shut it off.. same issue.... I pulled the 1406 off my other car and bolted it on.. I know that one was running perfect.. same thing.. started right up... but after I shut it off it squirted gas out the vents when I went to restart.... cant be the carb.. cant be the timing... anyone?? thoughts... guess??

Check the fuel pressure...The edelbrock carbs do not like fuel pressure more than 6 psi. I dont know what kind of fuel pump you have but the stock ones put about 9 or 10 psi and that can force fuel past the inlet needle when the float bowl is full..You may need to install a fuel pressure regulator if you dont already have one or if running a stock fuel pump.

Is the car up to temperature? Are you running ethanol fuel? Had the same problem on my 442 and it was fuel percolation. Put a spacer under carb and adjusted floats. Car runs fine now....just a thought.

Default Power Valve in the carb

I just had the same issue I run a Holley Double Pumper. It ran good until high idle kicked off then it would kill the motor and I looked inside the carb saw gas was being feed into the crab flooding it out. Front flaps were blackened. Tore the crab down found power valve diaphragm was split. Rebuilt the carb now she runs great. Just some food of thought this may be your problem or not.
