1977 l82 60000 orig miles
So I picked up an original l82 60000 miles. Have all orig paperwork even the key hang tag from dealer in 77 I am second owner.
Prob I was driving home which was a 350 miles cruise. Was going well car over heated pulled over let it cool off when I started her again belts were screaming and there was an unrythimic knock not so much a knock but a sound I heard was same as when a harmonic balancer goes. Cooled her off started sound went away drove 2 miles over heated and battery was near dead towed last 45 mins home. The harmonic balancer look bad rubber is flaked off. My friends think it's the crank but when idling you feel no vibration through engine. I unhooked belts to let engine idle a few seconds and noise was not as pronounced but still there. Any body have same experience or ideas just don't want to pull engine. To me the sound is outside of the engine.

Are you sure you haven't got two or more problems simultaneously? You need to figure out
1. most important, why did the engine overheat?
2. which belt was screaming?
3. Is the alternator charging the battery? Was it this drive belt that was screaming? The alternator may have seized.
4. Has the water pump failed? was it this belt that was screaming? Pump may be faulty.
If it was me I would slacken off the drive belts and see if the water pump, alternator, power steering pump and air con if fitted all turn smoothly by hand.
Probably a secondary issue, sounds like the harmonic damper is dodgy, easy to test, see if the timing marks line up where they should be in relation to the distributor position if it is really bad the outer ring can be moved sideways with a screwdriver or other lever. The outer ring of the damper has been known to "walk" off the centre part when the rubber fails and rub on the timing case - not good.

Burning Brakes
You might have two or three problems. If the belts are loudly squealing, the crank is turning, but one of the accessories doesn't want to turn. Since you are overheating, check the water pump. It should spin freely and not have slack if you wiggle the fan.

Just finished new waterpump thermostat rad cap and overflow tank cap. Took all belts off started the car for a second and still makes the noise which I think is dampener because there is a line scratched around the dampener. So I will change it in morning and pray that's all it is. The old thermostat was pretty cruddy and the old coolant well was water and sludge very old. Flushed it. Old waterpump would not turn very freely.at all.

i saw an alternator seize so bad the water pump couldn't turn. there are more than a few possibilities you will need to systematically attack things. i hope you suffered no internal damage though i think that unlikely.

And I have saying oh that's a spun bearing etc engine is done. But that clanking sound to me is just like that old harmonic balancer that went.
And it looks shabby but none of them have heard a bad harmonic balancer and it sound bad when they go.

So got everything switched balancer pump. Started it idled was making a clanking noise from the rear of engine and locked up Solid checked plugs all good. Dropped oil nothing on magnet on plug nothing took filter off opened filter small sand or smaller size metal not alot though. Cannot turn over even with a breaker bar. Now took all bolts out for cover to view flywheel it's a 4 speed. My question is do I have to drop the starter?

I hate to say it but if it was clanking then locked up and quit, you can't even turn it over with a breaker bar and there is metal in the filter, your next project is removing the engine. Good luck.
