Default Hood Latch 69 - 70 change?

Hi,

Looking for help with hood latches. Specifically the male passenger side on the firewall. I know the female part on the hood is different from 69 to 70, but did the male part change also?

I'm fitting a 71 hood to a 69. Drivers side OK. Have replaced the passenger side latch on the hood with a 70-76. However the rubber stop on the male part (1969) cannot be adjusted low enough.

Any help appreciated as always.

As far as I know the male latches are the same. The passenger side catch attached to the hood changed some time in early 69 along with the same attachment area on the hood. The cross cable is also different for 68 - early 69.

As long as you have the correct catch for your hood it should work

A picture or two may help

To my knowledge, the only difference in the stationary part of the latch was the profile of the pin (teepee). The 68-E69 had a rounded shape while the latter profile was more conical. Here's a pic of an early design.

Thanks 69, That looks like mine.

Are you aware of any height difference between 69 and 70?

Perhaps someone with a 70 up could measure from the top of the bumper mount to the latch mounting surface for me?

No, not aware of any height differences. Did look up the part that you are questioning in my parts book. It's called a PLATE, LK CATCH (part no. 3966628 RH). Shows it fitting 69-76 (2ND DESIGN). Nothing listed for a 68. The LH side fits 68-76. Something changed between 68 (and maybe E69); not sure what. Have you tried removing the pin and then closing the hood to eliminate it as the culprit?

Hi, mine is very early 69. September 68 build 2185. It is not the pin, because removing the bumper completely allowed the hood to close properly.

I measured 1 3/4" height. I'd like to know what the height is on later years.

If all else fails, I'll shorten that bumper support arm by about 3/4" and re-install the bumper.

jy: Mine is a mid-Nov 68 build. It has the early pin design. The pic is not of mine; it's an internet download. My car has a long hood (75-76 vintage) with the early latches. Don't have the problem that you describe. Took a closer look at where the rubber bumper contacts the hood. It contacts the underside of the hood, just forward of the female latch. Wondering if your bumper might be contacting part of the female latch, thereby holding the hood up?

Hi 69,

In my case, it is a 69 vette...
- I have a 70 or 71 hood
- 70 and up RH female latch
- early 69 male latch

The bumper is definitely contacting the female latch on a flat portion of the latch, just forward of the pin. See image.

This is what leads me to think there must be a difference in the male part from 69 to 70.

I appreciate your help!

Joe

I measured my 70 for you last night, hard to see but approx 1 1/4" tall.

The picture you show of the right hand catch stands approx 1/2" off of the hood where the bumper hits. The 68 - early 69 hoods use a different catch that sits flat against the hood.

See pics below:

Original 70 hood

Crappy repro hood patterned after a 68 hood

Notice how the rivet and bumped out areas are reversed

68 - early 69 RH catch

Finally, the RH catch installed on the crappy repro hood

Hope this helps

Jim,

The picture you posted and explanations are 100% correct. That is what leads me to question the male part of the latch. The photos below show two different latches. (Thanks to 69vette for finding this)

Above is what I have. (on a early 69 body with a 70 hood)

This is what I think I need. Seller claims correct for mid69 to 76. Notice the big difference in the arm position for the bump stop.

Can you tell me which of these is fitted to your 70?

Joe

Definately the bottom one, just double checked the height - 1 1/4"

Much easier to see the difference when the pictures are side by side
