Default Strangest Problem

My 1973 drives fine. My head lights work fine, but....when I'm driving with my high beams on and I push the button to change to low beams, it no longer shifts out of 1st. It's an auto transmission. I must have missed this because I most drive during the day. What could this possibly be? I know the trans needs vacuum off the manifold, but all I'm doing is changing an electric connection to change from hi to low beams.

Any thoughts?

It sounds like the kick down wire is getting power ( TH400)

Thanks - I'm a newbie and this is the first I have heard about the kick down switch. What does it do? I read that it's near the accelerator pedal. Are there test to see if it's functioning correctly?

If it is inadvertent power to the kickdown solenoid in the trans, disconnect the electrical plug at the trans (and wrap tape around the end of the wire so it can't short) and do a test drive. If the problem is gone, find out why that wire is getting power instead of from the kickdown switch.
