Just a question - why not vortec heads? That is what I went with and they were a great budget upgrade.

Well the price that people want for them even used by the time i put some work on them and then buy a new intake its about the price if a new aluminum pair plus the vortec are limited to the valve lift

ProMaxx heads. Look up the Car Craft 2012 SBC Budget head shootout.

I'd personally steer clear of Promaxx heads.

I had the same philosophy as you did on my build, but after 2 sets of crappy Promaxx heads and a few others, I ended up spending the money on a pair of AFR's and never looked back. Glad I did. Cheap heads seem to be a crap shoot and the way to go if you are willing to lose over and over again until you get a good pair. For me, I just got tired of losing after 4 pairs...

You both would really be upset with the $8K set of BBC heads we just had in here then. All the guides needed sizing.

I had to open up my AFR guides .001. They likely would have been ok. NEVER bolt any head on out of the box. Check them carefully just like anything else. That said they are still the best heads I ever bought.
