Default 1976 Heat Shield

Hi

I have a 76 L48 with a TH350. It looks like I have the brackets for whats called a "Shield A.S.M., Exh. Pipe Heat) on the exhaust before the cat. Although the brackets are there, there are only shields listed for the 4Speed in 75 (356951) and the TH400 75-77 (356953).

Did they just use the same hangers regardless of the shield being used?

the parts book also shows the same part number, 356953, for all 77 to 79 regardless of transmission. Have you looked in the 1976 AIM?

Yes, 8C-4. But the original GM parts book say its only for the TH400. Which parts book do you have? My Illustration Catalog is September of 76 and my Chassis and Parts Catalog is June 76.

I still cant find the part on any of the usual sites.

Thanks!

If the AIM specifies the shields for the TH400, then your car should not have had them. Without checking my 76 AIM, I'd say the brackets are there because the TH350 and TH400 used the same down pipes.

That's the odd part Mike... The AIM doesn't specify but the chassis and parts catalog does. I saw the empty mounts and thought that perhaps the original owner removed it.
