Default 1976 ca smog ?

How do I tell what smog stuff I need on my 76 with 350 & AT? The CA dmv records go back to 09, since I've owned the car. There are not dmv records prior to 09. Would an "XX" emission decal L48 with EGR & CAT be smog legal in CA?

If your '76 was originally a California car you'll need whatever it came from the factory with.

I have a 78, federal car meaning no smog pump and air injection to the exhaust manifold. My emission decal was very worn, ordered a new one from Ecklers.
The smog tech only looked at the info on the sticker

A California built Corvette (RPO YF5) would have had the XZ emission sticker and include PVC, EGR, Cat converter and A.I.R. The A.I.R. pump used the GM# 7801149 and was used from 1970 through 1977 so should be readily available from the used parts market.

Engine code would be CLS for RPO YF5, otherwise a non A.I.R. engine suffix was CKX...check your engine suffix for confirmation.

Hope this helps!

In a similar situation, stock 76 with all smog equipment however the cat doesn't look so good... excuse my ignorance but would that need to be replaced even if its "original equipment"? Looks like magnaflow has them available but for a hefty price tag.

Thanks in advance!

It would only need to be replaced if it is no longer functioning. Considering that it's 45+ years old, it most likely isn't any good, but hooking it up at the smog shop is the easiest way to tell, unless it's physically rusted out. If it were me, I'd just replace it to save me a trip to the smog shop.

If you do get a replacement, make sure it is the California version (it will have a California EO number stamped onto it, and they charge extra for those), and make it easier for your smog guy by installing it with the EO number facing down.

Take your car to a Test Only smog place and see what it will take.
Not to be ***, but 75 and older need nothing to pass smog.

Rather than asking your question in response to a 6 year post, it’s probably best to start a new thread.
