Best kit to rebuild the 200-4r?
Hi,
I wanted to see if there were any transmission guys that could really chime in on this one. I have secured a 1986 Monte Carlo SS 200-4r and I want to go through it before it goes back in my 79' L-82. I only want to cross paths with this tranny once so what would be the best bang for the buck on the rebuild kit. My motor is all stock now but certain see adding some aluminum heads, intake, cam and headers as money is available.
As of right now I am going to have someone rebuild the transmission for me. Unless, this is possible by a DIY'er. I would love to learn how.
Thanks,
Eden

You may check out the turbo Buick forum for more info on this.

Tons of info on that site.
I am planning on doing this job eventually myself. If you go to ckperformance.com , he wrote a book on rebuilding the 2004R for performance. The layout is a bit hard to read but the content is good.
I have the same trans as you. I bought it used and installed it as is and it had mushy shifts. I installed the following:
Ck Shift recalibration kit
Ck Servo
These two items made a huge difference in the shift quality giving fast positive shifts. The shift is not rough or hard as much as it is fast.
For the rebuild I am looking at :
Hardened Stator
Heat treated sun gear shell
Steel billet forward drum - to allow duel feeding the direct clutch piston
Probably Alto red eagle frictions
Undecided on band. Thinking either carbon fiber standard size or wide Alto red eagle
Let us know what you decide on. I am interested in reading your review.
