Default Torque Converter Bolts

I have the ARP torque converter bolts and need to know how to safety them. Locktight or lock washers? If locktight; blue or red?

I've always used lockwashers only.

I could be mistaken, but I would think that the back surface of the bolts, need to sit "flat" on the flanges of the torque converter. This would preclude the use of a lock washer. Therefore, I'd use "blue" Loctite.

If you use the "red" formula, you'd have one hell of a time, if you ever needed to remove those bolts....

I have always used red Loctite because the threads are coarse and short. Never any problem taking them out.

That's what my thought was. The ARP bolts didn't come with lock washers so my thought was lock tight.

Thanks!

Really??

Cut and pasted directly from the Loctite website:

Loctite Threadlocker Red 271 is designed for the permanent locking and sealing of threaded fasteners. The product cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces. It protects threads from rust and corrosion and prevents loosening from shock and vibration. It is only removable once cured by heating up parts to 500°F (260°C).

Ask ARP. They sold the bolts to you.

[I also believe that you do NOT use lockwashers. If you use Loktite, use the red stuff....but make sure you have cleaned the bolt and hole threads completely, first.]

I guess that could apply to any product and we could just use the forum to talk about the ice cream socials.

Thanks to all who helped. I don't need much help in most cases however I do at times. Glade you are all here for that.

I had never installed ARP bolts for a torque convert and just wanted to get it right.

Very glad I asked. I think if I had used the red locktite it would have been a regret later.

I work on heavy equipment for a living (Caterpillar dealer). I've never had a problem getting anything apart due to any color of lock-tite. Lock washers are totally useless and not used on Cat equipment for over 30 years. A properly torqued fastener in most cases will not come loose by itself. That being said, if you need belt and suspenders, a couple drops of blue or red won't hurt.

Some people 'do' and know; some people say they know...and don't. Folks who work on the 'big stuff' know.

Yep, this is a area I always use the Red on. As far as removal after use, pretty much a non issue. have never had a problem with removal
of bolts where it is used.
High HP/torque, trans-brakes, and power adders really work these bolts. If your setup is used for lighter duty, use the blue.

There are lock washers and there are washers that "claim" they're lock washers. A true "lock" washer is made from very hard steel with very sharp edges that dig into the material. The average lock washer sold today is totally worthless and that goes for the "shakeproof" lock washers as well. Once LocTite was invented there was no longer any need for lock washers.

Not needed...just torque them correctly. I just did this procedure about 1+ years ago....all good. Don't over engineer or overthink some things....
