Default Reading spark plugs and preferred plug gap.

I took the plugs out of the '81 to help with installing the side pipes and hear a lot of people say the best way to see how an engine is running is to read the plugs. I know you are supposed to do a run and shut off the engine then pull the plugs but in reality, mine is strictly a street cruiser and as the plugs were out I thought Id post them up to get some feed back. Pictures aren't the best and I can get better if required but whats the general consensus?

Also, when installing new plugs, whats the preferred gap for a standard HEI set up?
Thanks.

By the way, the plug in the bottom left is number 1 cylinder and was a new plug a few hundred miles ago.

Those plugs look good to me, about same as mine. I use the factory recommended gap of .045".
