Define "not starting". Is it cranking and not firing? Not cranking? When you replaced the battery, are you certain the battery cables are connected well?

If you have NO LIGHTS then you have a broken connection somewhere in the battery cables. Did you go under the car and check the ground cable to the frame? If that's good you will need to drop the starter and check the positive cable connection. On a hot day, I'll put my money on burnt starter wires at the starter.

You may have melted a 'fusible link'.
Look down by the starter and see if they are good or not.
Fusible links are listed as 'thermo' on this schematic.

I had a 74 long ago, same issues as you. My ground cable from battery to engine ground had corroded in the middle completely . Take a jumper cable from battery ground to engine ground, see if that will get it to start. Mark

1980 Ground problem starter pls. Help
The corrosion can happen anywhere that is metal. I would've the battery ground. Should be a large cable underneath the car from the battery box directly to the frame. Since you say you had no lights and placing a cable from the battery to frame ( assuming you meant frame and not the body) alleviated the symptoms, i would start there.

CV, VetteKid is correct ,battery cable from negative battery terminal to where it is attached to frame (it has been 35 years since I had the problem, getting CRS, can't remember s...) mine was corroded under car looked like a cancer in cable, swollen. Must have been nicked/cut at one time or another. I replaced complete cable instead of splicing. Mark
