Tire Pressures..........How Much Do You Run?
#141
In todays litigations based society I would be very careful of knowingly running tires with very low / very high tire inflation, unless you are setting up for a track day. Vehicles are now impounded for "safety checks" after an accident. Basically they are looking for who did what wrong. The insurance companies love this information - you guess why.

Watching the Formula 1 qualifying from Monza right now and the commentators just mentioned that the 2 different tire failures during the last race at SPA in Belgium 2 weeks ago according to Pirelli was due to the teams running LOW tire pressures...just saying...hmmmmm

Would a load/size/psi chart help clear things up? Here is a link to one. Fast forward to appendix B.

not really, just fuels a fire that was going out. If you look at a 255x60 15 tire and assume a 3,600 lb car, 900 lbs per tire you end up with a pressure that is so low they dont even list it on the chart.

Tire pressure is for more than load support.
It is for recovery when you hit a bump or hole, hard corner and keep the tire seated to the rim. The pressure also assists the tire in running true to the rim.
The info / chart also stated that you should follow manufacturers inflation instructions ..
Static calculations do not equal dynamic calculations.
You can put 4 tons on a telephone pole, but when the wind blows the vibration starts and the pole will fail. Think Tacoma Washington Bridge. When insufficient pressure is present to create a dampening effect in the sidewalls bad things will happen...
That is only one item that can result of insufficient pressure.
Enjoy the ride and be safe...
