Default Chasing a rubbing sound???

Hello C3 members,

A quick question for the group....

I am trying to chase down a rubbing noise that seems to be coming from either the rear R or L rear wheel area and would like to know how to set up the rear so that I can independently hand spin each wheel while they are on my 78....

You can't independently spin each wheel because they're tied together in the middle by the limited slip clutch plates. Sorry...............

I want to see you be safe here. If you are going to just raise the rear of the car, be sure to very firmly and safely chock the front wheels. If you have a lift, then it's a moot point.

Don't let the wheels droop while letting them spin in gear. You'll get a slight bind that makes a big clunk noise. Some cars are worse than others depending on how far the shocks let the wheels drop. Place the stands under the trailing arm without hitting the tired. Make sure the car can't move.

The most common cause of a "rubbing" sound in or around the rear wheels is a broken parking brake return spring because it drops down then gets ground up by the spinning parking brake drum. To find out you'd have to pull the calipers and rotors off and see for yourself.
