Went to go start my new engine...
Everything's hooked up, filled up, ready to rock. Hop in, turn the key and... The starter just spins and spins and the bendix doesn't engage. Crap😖. It's a brand new hi-torque mini starter, not rebuilt. And it just spins. Doesn't even try to engage the flywheel. Damn.

Skip White Performance. It was a new battery, never used, so definitely not fully charged. I'm hoping that's all it was, as its charging right now. Please please please be that...

Welcome to my world.
Two starters and was having issues with both. Started by bench testing each that they fired forward and spin.
Tried different combination of shims until I find a good setup.
With the cover off I can see the scraping along the flywheel as the pinion was trying to engage.
No room to pull it forward and measure. Wish I would have thought of that while the engine was still on the stand.
Using a PowerMaster Powermax with the diode for the resistor wire.

Pretty sure it's installed correctly. The gear just won't extend to engage the flywheel. It's set up correctly as far as the bolt pattern goes. Just got a new starter, we'll see what happens

I used a skip white when I first fired my last engine (out of car). Was not impressed at all. Switched to power master. What a machine. I wouldn't have anything else now.

I bought the Skip White starter for my new engine, too. After purchasing it, I heard a lot of negative things about it from real engine builders and switched to a Powermaster before ever even trying the Skip White.

Funny enough, I put in a rebuilt starter from Autozone, and it worked perfectly the first time. Pretty displeased with Skip White, it seemed like a pretty good deal.
On the bright side, 40 bucks for a starter isn't too bad at all. And now my baby is running again, for the first time in a year and a half.

So you return the defective new one. Every builder of everything occasionaly sends out a bad new one...
