You've got meter issues. As you've seen...the "old school" way will get you close.

"As you increase the gap, you decrease the dwell, which increases the timing".

The coil is not connected backwards is it?
The negative on the coil connects to the distributor, is that where your wire is connected.

Yes...the wire connected to the negative terminal on the coil runs under and unto the distributor.

I just ordered a new meter...patiently waiting for delivery!
