exhaust vs mono spring
with the way they ran my exhaust 25 years ago it runs outside the heat shield that protects the fiber spring . the person that did the work said he thought I shouldn't let the car sit still running for over 15 minutes because of the heat from the pipe . what would be the best stuff to wrap the pipe over it and do you think that would be a good fix until I get a new exhaust next year ?

I use the fibre glass exhaust tape on the exhaust pipes where they pass the transmission on my car, I think it would work well for your application. You should be able to source a roll from any auto parts store.

also get ss clamps or ss wire from HD to secure the ends of the wrap.

Yep. That's the ticket. When exhaust gets back to that area, the heat level should be down enough for that heat shield to do the job....moving or sitting.

Any sheetmetal shop or metal scrap yard ought to have something that works for you. It just needs to be reasonably stiff. I drilled mine out to match the mounting bracket holes and bent it a bit to accommodate the spring curvature.

Am I the only one that doesn't like the idea of wrapping exhaust pipes with some type of heat wrap? I have seen headers that were wrapped and rusted through (no idea of the brand, material or time they were wrapped.) I also have concerns of the heat wrap absorbing and fluid leak and smoldering from the pipes till it ignites.

A piece of .050-.080" aluminum somewhat wider than the spring and long enough to extend past the exhaust pipes will do just fine.
Wrapping the pipe will just delay the heat...for a while. Likewise with wrapping the spring. A metal heat shield will dissipate the heat better. But, when the car is moving, none of it is "necessary". It's only important during idling and at low speeds.

I Think I bought one new from V. B. P. , V. B. P. should of sent you one with the new spring Kit. It depends how you bought it, with Or without, Send them an E-Mail, get it coming, It needs to be put on while installing the new spring. Have a great day, Gene

Can't see that option on their web site. You are on your own, despite the warranty proviso in their literature that you need them. Rather strange they do not offer a set with their springs.

I know I just found this on one of the spring places & they sent it to me that day, 25.00 Plus ship. I bet Wilcox knows where to get them. I still have the one I bought because I found an original, Good Luck Gene

Just so it is known, even with those heat shields above the spring can fail if you put enough heat through your exhaust. This is not likely to happen to 99% of the cars on this forum though as my failure happened on a race track
This was before the failure

I wrapped my pipes with header wrap and clamps when i installed the spring ~5 years ago and no issues, but admittedly a garage queen that goes for sunday cruises mostly. I checked it fairly frequently the first few years there were no signs of heat fatique or anything. The spring doesnt feel hot to the touch when the car is warm. Maybe I'm pressing my luck, but I feel pretty confident!

Guys, I think that this issue is being blown way out of portion to the actual real probability that for 99.9% of C3 owners with a composite rear spring that damaging heat will effect the spring on the street.
Heat from the exhaust effecting a composite spring is a non issue for non raced C3's if you have the factory heat shield which every picture I see here on this thread does NOT OR you do like Ignatz shows in his picture with a home made heat shield made out of aluminum that really is pretty simple to fabricate with an aluminum roll from home depot/lowes and can be cut with metal scissors. This option is MUCH better looking as well compared to some of the options I see suggested.
My 360 composite spring has been on my 78 since 1986! with the factory heat shield installed as well at that time with zero heat related issues and that with an L-82 that use to run hotter than Hades and now a monster 355 pushing more than 425 HP.
