Default Great LS Engine Discussion by Nelson Racing Engines

A very good 19 min. video by Tom Nelson, discussing why it's so good, materials (iron and aluminum), common mods and mistakes.

Thanks for posting that. People often forget street engines operate over a very wide rpm range and concentrate on the "top" numbers and forget the bottom numbers are equally important.

GM Z06 manifolds support over 400hp, fit a C3 (even with a Z bar), and can be plumbed into 69 sidepipes.
The 500hp LS7 manifolds would probably fit as well.

Default To LS or not to LS... hmmm

I'll save my $$$ and enjoy my Gen 1 tech... until it's legislated to the dump pile. Until then, I'll enjoy the 350hp/400tq all day

Default ERL Sleeving

Check out our Drysleeve and Superdeck sleeving options for LS blocks. Our sleeves are 5.800" in length, addressing the piston rock issue with stroker set ups.

I'm not sure I understand your point, but I wasn't very clear on my comment. I have a '79 with doug's side pipes that I just installed earlier this year. I would consider an LS swap if it would bolt up to my pipes. I don't weld and no shop in town will touch my exhaust system without putting cats back on, so I went with side pipes because it was something I could handle. My old exhaust system was falling apart.

No problem, I get it now.
My stock SBC headers and sidepipes were all rusting out. I loved the sidepipes so bought new Sweet Thunder replacement 69 sidepipes only (link below) when I got my LS. The sweet thunders are supposed to flow better than 1oEM. Not sure, but they are larger and sound a lot less raspy.
The C5 Z06 exhaust flow better than most headers(link below) and could be bought for $50 takeoffs. From that, it was only a cheap muffler shop to connect to the sidepipes.

Ah I see your point. LS engine and side pipes, best of both worlds!

how do the camaro ls1 manifolds flow, this might be the deciding factor between hopping up the current 350, or going 454, or going with the ls1 from wifes wrecked camaro

From what I got from the video, the stock LS manifolds, often outperform the 'pretty' manifolds that are basically expensive shiny boxes with short runners.

The LS motors like the long runners and this dates back to the Mopar RamChargers experiments in the 60's that optimized torque and found their way on the infamous Cross Ram manifolds you saw on the Wedge Motors.

I'm still not sold on the LS, if I wanted a new style injected motor I would buy a factory LS powered vette. Maybe at some point I will do a swap but I don't know....
