What is the best Radar Detector?
I've been using the Valentine 1 for many years. I got tired of switching between cars and I bought the Escort Passport 9500ix. I was driving around naked (without a detector) today because the wife had a car and the aunt had the other.
My valentine is the most expensive and has more than paid for it's self over the years. I wish it did not even have X band or even K band because it causes distraction because police in this state only use KA and California KA and Laser. I only came across some some sheriffs using K band this summer in other states on this summers cruises all over the US.
The times in my life that I have been stopped for speeding was usually at night catching up with highway patrolmans You get a sunken feeling when you are catching up to the car way out in front of you on a freeway and you finally get close enough coming up on the rear and you finally can see those dreaded reflector stickers that say "Highway Patrol......."

Depending on which series (age) it is, you can program/tailor the Val 1 to suit your individual needs; somewhat more so with newer ones. The latest ones can even Bluetooth (via additional module IIRC) to an app that makes this much easier than hacking into it with sequences of button pushes, as well as letting your inner geek analyze signals aud nauseam if desired. My $.02

Yes the newer Valentines are programmable so you can eliminate any features/radar you dont want. I just upgraded my 2000 valentine this year for $199 since mine was one of the original models and collision avoidance radar was making it go off constantly....Valentine sent me a brand new model for the $199 upgrade. Pretty awesome...

I ran an escort 8500 for the longest and then upgraded to the 9500. I love the 9500. I keep it set on the pro settings and it tracks a lot of different radar sources. I've never had false alarms and when it goes off slow down.

I think the best detector was the original Escort. It was the first detector that really worked, every other one on the market at the time just let You know You were busted. The reason I consider it the best was because everybody " Knew detectors didn't work " so the Cops had no instant on, no Ka Bands or any other means to fool a detector. They just used X band and left it on. You could pick it up miles away and not even bother to slow down till You got close. Keep in mind this was the 55 MPH era. When Escort sold, the inventor was required not to have a competing detector for 10 years. After the 10 years were up He introduced the Valentine One.

If you all didn't drive those hopped up cars speeding all the time you wouldn't need expensive law averting devices, said no Corvette owner ever

It is a little different out west. Much of florida you just seem to get up to speed and you hit another toll booth, but out here in Nevada it is about 500 miles across the state and you never have to slow down.

I hope everyone knew that was a joke. Montana is my favorite, Nevada is next.

I'm running the passport 9400 in my 04. It's a built in system, radar detector ant sits in the front left fog light opening, laser shifters in each fog light opening near the front license plate, rear laser shifter right above the rear license plate, display is where the ashtray used to be, and a green to red LED sits right under the speedometer. This system has yet to let me down. Unless the ashtray door is open it is competly unseen. I just don't like having something hanging on the windshield that I have to take down every time I leave the car.

Many law enforcement agencies using Radar have instant on.
Your caught before the Radar dectection device has the opportunity
to notify you.
Sorry for the bad news.

the instant on has been around for many years...... modern detectors go off from miles away. So when they are instanting on traffic way out in front of you you have a heads up that they are in the area. V1's like I have also give the threat direction. In my wide open area the KA can go off and it is still many minutes until you actually see the patrolman along the road

Flying under the radar with Deep Thwart...
The C3 has a fairly low radar cross section (RCS), which means our sharks aren't "visible" from as far away as are most other vehicles, giving us a bit more time/distance to react. And FWIW, tho I'm not a LEO, I do happen to own a Stalker K-band instant-on gun, so not just speculating here.
edit - Tho modern police radars do a lot (and I mean a LOT) better job at quickly determining speed at longer ranges than back when our cars were new, nevertheless the C3 (particularly later years) DOES have a relatively low RCS.

By serial number my Valentine 1 is the latest model. I was just over at costco and they had the escort 8500X50 blue for $179.99. so i came home and looked them up and that is cheap compared to my about $500 other models. So I'm go to get one for my rarely used cars.
It is a hassle to have 4 registered cars

Tho I've hardwired all my vehicles had over the past several years, I just move my V1 between cars. The additional kit necessary isn't expensive at all, and I can put the savings towards higher priorities.
Anyway, here's the app mentioned earlier...

My radar detector is of limited use, hills and small rises make it useless until I crest the rise, and now with this instant on thing I can still get nailed if I'm going too fast.

I used to think our cars were low radar return to but no they are not. I once had a hand held gun pointing at my car from very short distance and it read 28 mph with the engine idling and the car in park. I assume it was picking up the Stainless Fan I had at the time. When a Patrol Man uses Radar and gets a Speeder the Gun doesn't tell him what car it is, so is it the Mini Van or the Vette ? I'll bet the Vette gets it every time.
Instant on, yes that's been around for many years. Depends on the Cop, and how often he is flipping it on and off. If he is in a hurry to fill His Ticket book, of which in Washington State they always are, then He will be writing Tickets all day long. So paying a little attention to the detector generally gives plenty of warning. All of this is pretty much a moog point for those of us living in Seattle, we are now in the top 6 for worst traffic thanx to 3 mayors in a row having a War on cars, adding bike lanes everywhere. SPD probably only has 3 Radar Guns left, there's no money to be made anymore.

Anyone ever tried on of these detector/scrambler units?

Looks to be ineffective.
