Default One wire torque converter lockup

I've been reading threads and want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly.

I'm installing a 700r4 and according to the diagram below I only have to have a keyed 12 volt power source to pin A and it will lock up in 4th gear only. Is that correct?

I will be getting a kit for this eventually but wanted it to lock up in 4th in the meantime.

Gees, you don't need any "kit"; just a inexpensive pressure switch screwed into the 4th servo pressure tap then run a hot wire to the switch and another wire thru the left side plugin to the solenoid (the other solenoid wire being grounded to one of it's mounting bolts).

I use a 15 psi Hobbs (actually Stewart Warner) pressure switch and they're available thru the internet at around $25 to $35 each. Honeywell makes the switches then they are marketed under a number of different brand names.

I pretty sure you will have to pull the trans pan an change the 4th gear pleasure switch from a normally closed switch to a normally open switch. I have a 2004r but I seem to recall the 700 lockup is the same configuration.

The link 75 posted does have a lot of good info.

Eye sight starts going, then different body parts hurt and I can't remember the other signs of age!

got to drop the pan to see how it's wired in the valve-body, otherwise those pins don't mean much

lock up solenoid in trans 1 wire to

internal or external 4th gear pressure switch normally open

in series to vacume switch ( optional)

in series to brake switch

to keyed power source fused

ymmv

I did read that thread. My car rarely sees the highway for any period of time. My thinking is I can wire a 12 volt switch to terminal A that I can turn on to engage the clutch whenever I do go on the highway.

During normal city driving I would just leave it off.

Ok. I thought the pins would all be wired the same. I'll verify the wiring.

you could wire a keyed 12v to a switch located somewhere in the cockpit and turn it on at will

you could put 12v to one of the pins you "think" goes to the solenoid and if you hear it click, you are good, however the solenoid must be pointed up and not on it side otherwise it would energize. don't ask me how i know

Use an ohm meter , check between case and pin A, should read infinity. Meter between case and pin D, should read the lock-up solenoid resistance. If so, your pic is correct, power into pin A will not lock the converter till you have 4th gear pressure. Power into pin D will lock converter manually, i believe in any gear except 1st, at least that's how a 2004r works. Not sure which circuit your lock up solenoid gets pressure from on the 700.
