Default heater resistor wiring question

I am replacing the dash wiring harness on my 68 convert. The three wires going to the heater resistor (three prong female plug) has enough length of wire to reach the three prong male contacts on the heater resistor but- the dash harness and heater resistor wires are on the passenger side of the firewall and the contacts on the heater resistor are on the other side of the firewall in the engine compartment. I can find no hole with grommet to route the wires thru. The PO had disconnected this wire and the AIM only shows the wires with "to heater resistor" notation. Before I get my drill and make a hole, does anyone know where this wire is supposed to go thru the firewall? RA

Hi RA,
Gotta be a way!
I can't help though because by 71 the connection was still on the backside side of the heater box, but the connection was within the interior.
Hopefully a 68 person will be along.
Regards,
Alan

This is looking up from the passenger's side footwell just to the right of the center console and behind the heater box. You can just see the beginning of the 3 wire connector.

Thanks, Alan. They could have mounted the resistor anywhere on the molded heater box. On mine it is in the engine compartment near the connector for the blower motor. I had the whole assembly out of the car a week ago and installed the new resistor in the stock place where I removed the old broken one. I could have re-positioned it at that time. Last resort is to drill thru the firewall. My bubba fix will be a little more elaborate, using the correct color wires, plus I have several extra plugs with the correct configuration. Maybe someone knows where the wire is supposed to go. I have looked everywhere and can not find any hole in the right place to send the wire on the harness. The direct route requires drilling a new hole.

As Alan posted in my 68 the resistor and wiring are all on the inside. The resistor mounts on the backside of the heater housing towards the firewall. If your resistor is on the engine side of the housing you might have a later outer housing.

Mine doesn't have a/c so I can't say for certain that the a/c cars might have the resistor on the engine side.

Let's have some other 68 owners offer their thoughts.

Not sure if this is what you mean RA but on my 69 BB no A/C car the three wire connections from the blower motor joins in a Y to the starter harness just under the wiper vacuum pot and does not go back inside the firewall. It is a branch of the starter harness.

I'm OK with the blower motor. I'll post a photo later to show the resistor. RA

My 68 vert is a early production/ Oct 67. Don't know if it's different but I can take a look at it when I get home tonight. Replaced both in mine years ago and don't remember how it goes.

Our early 68 vert (no AC) heater resistor is on the backside of the heater box inside the car.

Default heater resistor

OK! With your help (many thanks), I located the male terminals that match up to the female plug that is labeled heater resistor on my wiring harness. I can probably get my hand back there to connect it. But........what is this identical resistor on the engine side on the heater box near the fan supposed to be for. It was broken, so I replaced it with a new resistor. Same plug configuration. ????? Whatzitfor? I do not have A/C. Build date 10/26/67.

Hi Ron-

Looks like someone modified your box because they probably couldn't figure out how to get to the wires on the back of the inside box. I"ve seen 1 other case of this where they just lengthened the wires.

I would like to hear from a 68 owner with AC ....I can't see where this resistor is anywhere on my car. I do have the wires coming out of the harness, but they have covered ends (from the factory? ) and all three are tied in a loose knot.

If those wires are Tan, Light Blue, Orange and Yellow then they are supposed to have a connector on the end of them and plug into the heater blower switch in the dash. What I don't see is Tan...

What is currently on the ends of the wires in your picture is not a factory item.

Hi S63,
Don't you think the wires in your picture are these?
Regards,
Alan

Which end up here?

Alan, I totally think those are my wires...i am just having a hard time finding the resistor. I have one more plastic vent to remove to get a better view, but it is so tight back there i don't see how a plug end would even be able to squeeze in there. I need a good mirror on a stick!!

It's an air car... it won't have the resistor inside the car like the non air car did.

And 68 wires inside are different than the 69... Last might I was working on a colored schematic for this and fell asleep... lol I won't be able to re-visit it tonight but soon I hope.

This is as far as I could get it tonight.. it still needs a ton of clean up and to be verified.. but this should be close for 68 w/ac. The red hose is actually a white striped hose, I just needed a color to stand out and also need to apply a note when I'm finished with it.

Hope it helps you Staylor.

-Willcox

UPdated version:

I feel this is correct. The only thing left to verify is the lower hose and middle hose on the switch number 2 and 3. (the pick and tan hoses). You'll notice I've inverted them on the two different pictures. So if your are inside your car could you look at it and tell me which version is correct.

I don't feel so bad now, knowing others are having the same amount of fun tracking down mysterious wires as I was having. I just finished installing my new dash wiring harness and OMG! nearly everything works now (except the clock, of course). Clock is new and worked with the OLD harness, so it may be a ground problem. Wilcox- this is a great diagram. Can you tell me what the "low Blo" switch would be called so I can search and purchase it? My wiring diagram says "console climate mode switch"

Also, do you know where the heater resistor conn goes inside the car on an AC 68 car? I don't see it anywhere on the heater box.

Thanks!!!!
