Someone may correct me and that's fine because I do not know everything but I have a 80 also. The biggest problem with 80's was emissions. Because of that they the smogger heads on the 350 which restricts the air flow and the motor cannot breath. I bought some world products sr torquer heads 202/1.6 and that was the best performance upgrade for me. Night and day performance. Good luck

Just a quick question, if you're planning on making this a DD, why stick with a flat tappet setup? Full roller would seem more user friendly for mods down the road.

I think a good set of heads an intake and headders will suprise you,the stock L82 cam isn't that bad and is about the only thing you absolutely don't need to change. There is much better stuff out there but if you get the ignition set up and a decent carb (not a 600) you will be amazed how well it runs you will be in your target horsepower range.
Get a 64 cc chamber aluminum head and get that compression up to close to 10-1 you will be golden.
