Default Head swap on SBC 406

I currently am running camel hump 291 heads with 1.94/1.6 valves. Curious what would be gained from going from the set of camel hump's to a set of Bowtie Vortecs the "sawtooth" heads I was offered a set complete for $250 need cleaned up and machined though as my cam is .555/551 lift

A dramatic improvement for sure and hp increase per dollar would be unbeatable. I have modified Vortec heads on my 383 and I've run 12.15 so there is plenty of potential there.

Just realized they are not bowties, I thought the sawtooth markings stood for bowtie vortecs but they're for the 062 casting heads. I'm just not sure if I should invest in vortec heads. Or hold off until I can get something with bigger runners. Given a 406 is a very large displacement small block.

I wouldn't put any head smaller than 210cc on 406ci engine.

I run DART iron eagle 200cc intake, 64cc chamber, 2.02/1.60 on my 406...Love the combination. I am not running as much cam as you are though,--I am running a Comp XR282HR: .510 intake .520 exhaust lift.

With the extra breathing form your higher lift, i think your motor would benefit form a 210 minimum, as Motorhead suggests above...

I also run Dart heads in Aluminum....200cc on a 406.
It absolutely rips....

Save your money for a set....it is worth it....

I went from ported GM 492 angle plug heads with a 66 cc combustion chamber on my 406 to AFR 210 cc runner heads with 65 cc chambers. It was worth over 50 hp!

Put 210cc AFR's on my 406 which has a similar cam lift profile as yours. It's a Torque monster, and RPM's build quickly. 406CI is a big pump. Don't starve it. Worth the $$ in the long run.
