~65mph @ ~3100 RPM looks like a 3.70:1 final ratio! Should be easy enough to verify. Does it shift all the way into 3rd?

To find the rear end ratio, you need to jack up the car, turn the drive shaft ONE turn, and count the number of revolutions the rear tire makes. This will get you pretty close depending on how accurately you measure.

'Switching the rear end out' is no small feat either.

I don't remember what it was before, but I cruised at around 70 to Florida and I sure don't recall it being that high. I had to stop for gas like 5 times..lol...but I didn't care...I was carrying my grandfather's ashes to the National Cemetary giving him one last cruise! He loved our Sunday drives...he was 90 years old...went from Newberry, SC to Ocala, FL. 420 miles one way.

As for the pic...thanks! I'm sure you can tell by my ignorance to cars that I'm all girl! lol

curious to hear if its in 3rd or something else
Turn around

Edit: can you feel it shift into 3rd or if you put it in low manually can you work your way up to 3 and feel it/hear the rpm change

Your 78 should have come with like a 3.08 gear or even 2.73, which would make the rpm at 65mph closer to ~2500, or lower. 3.70 was a popular performance upgrade. (LOL I did it). Jacking it up and couting the turns as suggested is the quickest way to tell.

I haven't driven it yet...but mechanic said it was shifting properly. When I get it back Thursday, I will video and post results.

Count the shifts. Is it shifting all the way to third gear? The selector could be misaligned and "D" is actually "2". Either that or the rear diff has been changed or the "new" trans is slipping.

The 5th character should be an L or an H.

In any case there apparently were optional rear diffs that year.

According to this:
http://www.corvsport.com/Corvette/C3..._1978_VIN.html

Optional Rear Axle Ratios (G95) - A selection of optional rear axle ratios.

In 1978, these included: 3.08 (Code OA), 3.36 (Code OK), 3.36 (Code OM), 3.55 (Code OH), and 3.70 (Code OJ)
The code is on the rear diff itself.

I agree. Find a flashing radar speed sign nearby and see what the sign says when your car says 60. I bet they have the wrong speedo gear in the tranny

Ya. I used mine to cross check it. Works good. Has a heads up display that works off the glass glare/reflection.

[QUOTE=REELAV8R;1592282656]The 5th character should be an L or an H.

The Corvette Black Book says the 5th character should be an L (350ci, 176, 185 hp) or a 4 (350ci, 220hp, L-82) which mine has so, with the 4 in her VIN, her car is an L-82.

OK guys! I have my baby home!! Just drove her about two hours, mostly Interstate and she ran GREAT!! 59 mph = 2900 rpms (checked speed against speedometer app and it is accurate) I felt all the shifts and convinced tranny is working right. The only issue was I heard a knocking, so I stopped in Advanced Auto to check it out (and to buy replacement rearview mirror and air filter - which for some reason there wasn't one in there after the rebuild! ACK!!) The knocking is the power steering pulley. I replaced that pump about 7 or 8 years ago. Guess it's time to do it again. And the A/C still needs to be replaced - AGAIN, but still waiting on NAPA to tell me if they will honor the parts or not. A guy from on here hooked me up with a Corvette shop not far from me. I spoke with him yesterday and I will be going to see him soon as I can to get his opinion on things in person. For now, I'm going to take it easy with "her" and enjoy early morning cruises until I get the A/C fixed. After all the mechanical "stuff" fixed, I will begin on the interior carpet, weather stripping, passenger side mirror guts, and paint job! I'm just happy to have her home! Thank you to everyone for your help!!!!! Kim
