Default 454 camshaft sprocket nylon or steel?

Hi,

is the original cam sprocket of a 1974 BB (454 cu in) made out of steel or nylon? Due to the low compression ratio of this engine the pistons may not touch the valves if timing chain or sprocket fail. Is that correct?

thanks and regards

Fred

They usually wont if youre asking which to use while the nylon works a steel one is so cheap makes no sense not to. Dont see anything wrong with a single link chain unless youre beating it to death

The original sprocket is made of steel with a nylon coating on the teeth. If the nylon hardens and breaks off the engine will run without interference but not smoothly.
