I wrapped my inserts with DEI Titanium header wrap before installing them into my side tubes. My IR thermometer shows 100° to 120° after driving 70 MPH for a half hour.

Just curious if the wrap affected the sound at all.

Those inserts have a solid wall outside diameter. No effect on the sound.

I like the look of the cheese grader shields but unless coated the holes will start to rust...tomorrow

I had a 383 in our 69 with hooker pipes and got burnt a time or two as did tina, then I swapped a fellow the 383 for a 454 with hooker side pipes, but he had wrapped his pipes in a butt fugly off white header wrap and I quickly discovered that it still got hot but wouldn't burn our legs, I was in love.
I plan to buy some of the black color off ebay and re wrap then, the look is not for everyone by a long shot, to me it gives a race track look which is what I desire and your wide body unlike many wide bodies looks far more race car than street custom to me so the wrap would work well on yours too.

ONLY the covers listed in the previous post will work. ALL others will leave you horribly disfigured and will probably contribute to global warming and give you AIDS.

Yeah, I was actually referring to the above 'type' of heat shields. They are the ones Im running. No need to buy the 450 dollar corvette branded models.

plus some of the script shield insist upon themselves a bit too much,

On the no names you got, did the holes start to rust yet? how tight are they on the pipe?
could I run them over wrap?

Not true, I had my jhot coated and I can lay my hand on em at operating temp (albeit for a second or two but no burn). No where near as hot as the chrome. As a matter of fact it also reduced my under hood temp tremendously.

I was about to ask the same question.

I knew that, but wasn't sure if they would dampen some sort of resonance in the hollow cavity that would effect the sound. Good to know.

Get out your wallet.

These shields are spendy, but very high quality and you will not ever burn yourself with them on. I have a set and you can always just lay your hand on them and not get burned regardless of how you've been driving.

I went to high school (class of 82'!) with a pair of twin girls that drove a 72' convertible with Hooker side pipes. At our thirty year reunion we got to talking about some of the cars we had, and five women present still had scars on their right ankles from getting out of the twins Corvette and forgetting about the pipes.

I have also bee running these same patriot heat shields for 2 years now... They work well. $100 total with hardware and a couple wraps of header wrap where I attached the clamps to hold them on the pipes they never get hot at all... 0 chance of burns. and im still waiting for that "rust" that was supposed to start the day I installed them.. maybe mine are defective? I left tem outside for a few weeks last year .. Thought for sure that would cause them to rust. I do plan on powder coating them black at some point though...

I wrapped my sweet thunder inserts in 1/2" fiberglass baffle matting and the pipes still got hot from the ends conducting..

Ive had this exhaust for about 5 years now and the holes on the heat shields look as nice as the day I bought them. The muffler pipe underneath it is starting to show some discoloration and I may spray them with black BBQ paint this summer.

Im very happy with the kit but please be aware that it is a 'universal' mount kit and requires drilling small holes in your frame and some creativity with the mounting brackets. Well worth the price though.

I simply attached 4" stainless hose clamps under each end of the shields with 2 pop rivets on each and then put a couple wraps of header wrap around the pipes only where the hose clamps would touch the pipes and keep them in place and isolate them from conducting heat.... no permanent mods needed at all..
