Default How to cool side pipes ?

So I bought a beautiful wide body 71 roadster w pipes.

I love the pipes but don't love burning my legs.

Was thinking of spraying them w jet hot to keep heat in.

Anybody have clue how to cool them? Thnx

jet hot/ceramic coating will still be hot enough to burn your legs

I got the shields after my wife's leg got burned. I did spray part of the pipes with that high temp black paint so the corvette on the shields stands out more and it does cool it down enough that you won't get burnt but I'm not sure if they have it in a chrome color or not.

I made these out of stainless. With the Hookers theres nothing you can do. You and your passengers will burn yourselves. You can remind 'em as they are getting out and still get it...

They work .. on the hottest day they are 97 deg on my I.R. gun

No really good way to cool the pipes - here is a slightly cheaper option for heat shields. I always like the cheese grater look. I used these kind for a few years with Hooker side mounts.

Thanks Mjolitor. They are just 1/8 th stainless, I had to send them off with a friend to where he worked at a mill. He had one of the millwrights weld some squared loops to the back and they are just hoseclamped on. They don't move, I never need to tighten them.
We get some days over 100 DegF here - never a problem.

I've always wondered how wrapping the insert in exhaust wrap before sliding it into the side pipe would do...

I have the Hooker Header side pipe combo. When I did my restoration, as they were a bit ragged, I went the Jet-hot route. They will still burn you. But they seem to cool quicker. The worse one was when I drove the car to a show and went to raise the hood and leaned over to adjust the idle and pushed my shin up against the collector. Nice scar, and it took three weeks to heal. Unless you go with the shields, there still a hazzard.

This IS the only way you will protect yourself from burns. Summit sells a similar kit but it takes some searching and Im too lazy to post a link. With heat shields like these, you can rest your bare hand on them after a spirited run and it wont bother you a bit.

If you are saying covers "IS the only way". You are correct. If you are saying those covers are the only way you are not. My covers cost me $50. and 97deg will not hurt you.

Heat shields help somewhat, but even they get hot .. No Spray-on will do any good... I still have scars on my left calf from my 66 Convertible with sidemounts.. learn to step wide................. funny story..A cop once knelt on mine, after I was just blasting thru the gears, to ask for my License for a ticket... THEY WERE HOT! He was slow to react and got really burned

Pity that aerospace ceramic heat shielding shuttle technology is not readily available yet.

i wish i could help you guys but i just don`t know.lets start by saying i had side pipes on 3 previous corvettes all big blocks.i used a mirror and is appears to be just a slotted pipe what looks like louvers that go around a 1 3/4" pipe . totally different from my hooker set. i think they call this a resonator style?.they are 4 1/2" diameter 304 SS. the pipes are exactly 98 degrees were you exit door after a long drive .the pipes will burn you at intersection of primary pipes and collector but cool rapidly to point your legs would contact when exiting. purchase from Huron a few years back ,engine 408" SBC.
