79 horn contact
I discovered the plastice rivets on my 79 horn contact broke, hence the horn contact started to seperate. but when I was installing the new one, I noticed the "L" shape part of the contact does not come close to the horn rod. I completed the installation thinking it's suppose to be that far and when the horn is press contact will be made.
It does not make contact. How far is the horn rod suppose to stick out from the hole it is in?

I just fixed my horn contact situation. The "L" on the contact can be bent to contact the plunger. Post a picture or two and I'll try to help. Make sure you have the plunger, spring, and plastic collar installed correctly.
This photo from Willcox shows the correct way that it is installed...

You may just need the spring, that's what it sounds like to me too.
It comes in a kit, but if you were in a pinch I would think a spring from an old ball point pin pulled out slightly might work.
Remove the black retainer and see if there is a spring inside

I got another horn button repair kit today, during installation I discovered the rob was installed upside down. The pin section was inserted in the spring and flange on top.
re-install it the correct position, hence a good 1/2" was visible. but when I installed the horn contact horn still did not work, fuses are good.

Another classic reason why I hesitate for anyone working on my cars, one of the initial fix for this 79 was the key. The two mouse ears looking tab on the ignition key broke, hence the ignition key had to be replace.

This will produce for you the diagram I've posted below.
Follow this diagram and you can figure out what the issue is with your horn.

When you posted your problem, you mentioned that the plunger rod did not touch the "L" shaped extention on the upper horn contact. I assume that when you installed your new parts, (plunger, spring, and retainer) the plunger now touches that horn contact.
There is not supposed to be any relative motion of the plunger or spring when you press the horn cap. They are permanently in place as part of the horn ground circuit.

this is not a fix for your horn problem but it is something I found to have worked for me. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-easy-fix.html
