200-4R tranny install -- Day 2
Day 1 of the 200-4R tranny install was R&R day. Old one got pulled and the new one got installed. Tranny lines only needed some bending by skilled hands -- however, the flow is reverse from the TH350.
Day 2 was tech day. Install TV cable and dipstick, set up shifter, etc. (Oh, and replace the exhaust manifold that got busted while pulling the exhaust.) Miracle of miracles, the custom dual exhaust fits perfectly -- just by a quarter inch!
Went for a test drive. Okay at first, but shifting went crazy -- 1st to 4th. Adjusted TV cable. Worked fine for a few minutes, then wouldn't shift past 2nd. Adjusted TV cable. Works pretty good now, but not perfect. Drops into 4th too soon. TV cable is all kinked up. Going to get a TV Made EZ kit from Bowtie Overdrives. Oh, and something's leaking, but once it's found, it'll get fixed -- no big deal.
4th is working perfectly, and the lockup converter is fine, too. It's a wonderful feeling to go down the freeway at 70 mph with the engine purring at 2000 rpm :yesnod:
My recommendations:
--The 200-4R tranny is great. Installation really is plug 'n play from a TH350. No cutting, hammering, drilling, or welding required. And if you want to go back to the TH350 (which you won't), it plugs right back in.
--The TV Made EZ system is a MUST HAVE item! That darn old TV cable is incredibly critical to the proper functioning of the transmission, and this doohickey will let you set your tranny the way YOU want it!
--You will have problems. Budget for them. I got lucky in that the mechanics I'm working with aren't out to clean my closet, so to speak...

'79 L-82 Coupe -- fairly original -- 56K miles (or so it says). TH350, true duals, glass tops, Blaupunkt CD player, and crackling paint!

You might want to try your local trans parts supplier for one of these:
http://www.powerglide.com/parts/parts/As1-01K-1.htm
I help to correct ther TV cable geometry on cars that were not originally equipped with the proper setup. You also might want to try and source a throttle bracket from an early eighties Z28, They ran 700r4's and Quadrajets. I got mine from a boneyard for $5.

I can't remember, do you have to shorten the drive shaft with the 200r4?

Re: 200-4R tranny install -- Day 2 (sd pacecar)
No. That's one of the great things. Everything fits: driveshaft, yoke, crossmember, exhaust...all of it! The only problem is the top of the dipstick gets in the way of the cheap plastic ignition shielding -- so it goes on top of my pile of "original" parts.
Now all I have to do is get the TV cable working right, find & fix the tranny leaks, and find the exhaust leak (wasn't the manifold -- must be the donut). :smash:
