Default Restoring alternator

How can I make my alternator look like new again? It is stained, and I've tried some aluminum polish, but that didn't do much. This winter I am prepared to disassemble and rebuild it. How can I recondition the casing?

I have used "Cast Blast" paint on mine. There was a thread about it awhile back, so I tried it. Looks pretty good, maybe a little darker then original. Seems to be holding up OK

Tell you what I did. Took the alternator off the car and went over the whole thing including the fins and pulley with a medium grade wire wheel in a drill press. It polishes up all the metal and removes all corression. Then wiped it down with a wax and it looks great 2 years later.

With this in mind, why not just get a new one. Alternators aren't that expensive and it will save you hours of time trying to clean and rebuild the old one. Just a thought.

Try John Pirkle down in Augusta GA. He is a master rebuilder and can give you some pointers.

I actually did this a few weeks ago,i was very curious how the alternator looked inside,so i picked it apart :D .I took the alternator house and put it in a mxture of Degreaser and citrous cleaner, let it soak for a while and it worked really well...
You see, when i`m bored,i always find something to pick apart and investigate, even if it works :smash: :smash:

Brother-in-law did it on his 73 Nova, looks new....

S.O.S pads with cleaner in the pads (blueish green kind) little water and a dry towel. Dip s.o.s pad in water.... scrub then wipe clean, looks brand new!

Hope this helps.
